What is Field Alert?
We developed Field Alert to meet the needs of independent insurance producers and agencies to stay current with changes to insurance laws and regulations. By purchasing a Field Alert subscription, an individual producer receives a report of the changes to the laws and regulations for the states in which that producer is licensed, and for the lines which that producer markets.
But dont the insurance companies that have appointed me keep me current?
Thats not necessarily true. Insurers typically inform the field about issues that impact the company. There are many issues, such as paying for meals or charging customers service fees, that impact the producer but not the insurer. Therefore, the insurer is not as likely to pass the information along to the producer, even though the producer is responsible for the complying with the law or regulation.
How does it work?
Producers purchase a subscription online by filling out a subscription form and submitting a credit card number. Alternatively, producers purchase a subscription via mail by printing the subscription form and mailing a check or money order to the address provided. As part of the process, the producer chooses a unique user name and a password.
After the subscription is processed, the producers user name and password is activated. This is done automatically if the producer completes the purchase online. If the producer completes the purchase via mail, then the producer will be notified once the user name and password are activated.
Once the username and password are activated, the producer signs in and is taken to a web page that contains a report for each line of business and all states selected. Each report contains the citation of law, regulation or bulletin, the enacted or issued and effective dates, a brief summary of the item, and a link to the full text of the law, regulation or bulletin. How often are the reports updated?
Our database is updated each weekend and any new items will be available on your reports on Monday morning, including holidays. For most producers, we suggest checking your reports on a bi-weekly or monthly basis. We send a monthly reminder to all producers to remind them to check their reports. We add items to our database as soon as the final enacted/adopted version of the item is available. For legislation, that usually means within 2-4 days of enactment, regulations can take longer.
What are your sources of information?
We subscribe to a comprehensive service called Statenet for updates to laws and regulations, and also obtain information directly from the state departments of insurance. As part of our service, we undertake a 50-state plus District of Columbia search of new bulletins, memoranda and informational letters. We also gather information from federal agencies such as the Department of Treasury and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
